The sources of the PDE lexicon: analyzing specific varieties

On Thursday, small groups of you will consider data from specific varieties (advertising: pest control, cleaning products; medicine: prescription drugs; slang). Does your variety rely on loanwords? word-formation (affixation, compounding, blending)? word creation? You might want to consider how the sources of your variety relate to its functions. (And, yes, it’s a bit silly to analyze products without a sense of their visual content and design). We’ll be revisiting some of this data next week when we talk about semantics.

(I hope I’ve transcribed things correctly. There are a few I’ve left out because I’m not sure, but you’ll be getting a xerox of the slang sheet ..)
