The articles that have been included in this encyclopedia began life as assignments for postgraduate seminars in the history of the English language.

During the course, the material for each article was presented to and critiqued by peers, submitted in draft to the instructor, and revised – sometimes substantially – by the student.

After the course, I invited the authors of the best articles to submit them for publication on this website.
