EmodE Phonology homework takeup

7.3 extremely well done

Assibilation evident from the spellings of

suffishent, menchened, trashewer, Injans, prudenchall

From the spelling <behing> we might infer the pronunciation /_n/ (since because of ‘g-dropping’ <_ng> has become associated with /_n/).

From the spelling andvell we assume either

§       a genuinely intrusive /d/

§       or the assumption that <nd> often represents /n/ (and therefore the awareness that /d/ is often lost in other words)

Leonad shows loss of /r/, imbercillity shows intrusive /r/

7.25 pretty well done too, but with a few more frequently recurring problems

Raising of /ε/ to /I/:

-look for words that in PDE should have short ‘e’ but which are spelled with <i>

3. pritty, 11. instidd, 27. kittles.

Lowering of /ε/ to /æ/:

-look for words that in PDE should have short ‘e’ but which are spelled with <a>

13. bag ‘beg’, 20. latt ‘let’, 21. naxte ‘next’

Incomplete GVS: PDE [i] appears as [e]

-look for words that have long [i] in PDE but are spelled with something that suggests [e]

2. dead ‘deed’, 5, 15, 19 Resate ‘receipt’

The questions at the end of 7.25

§       two issues arise from the spelling of Conshius

o      assibilation has taken place <sh>

o      no <n>: perhaps confusion with the word Conscience

§       two possibilities for the spelling perticular

o      writer aware of variation between <er> and <ar> and hypercorrects

o      spelling <er> reflects [*r] (cf. merger of fern, bird, nurse)

§       spelling obleg suggests incomplete GVS: [i] hasn’t diphthongized to [ay]
