BASE-BALL.
DEFEAT OF THE BOSTONS BY THE ATHLETICS.


PHILADELPHIA, June 26 -- The game of baseball
between the Athletics and Bostons to-day was
witnessed by about 4,000 persons. The features of
the game were magnificent fielding and batting by
the Athletics, a clean home run by Hall and three-base
hits by Force, Fisher, Craver, and Hall.
McVey, of the Bostons, made a three-base hit in
the ninth inning, and scored the only run for the
Bostons. The following is the score:

The Stars of this City played a short-handed nine
against the Staten Island nine yesterday, and the
result of the game was as follows:

There are to be four professional games of
base-ball played on the Union Grounds, in Brooklyn,
E.D., this week. They have been arranged as follows:
On Tuesday, June 29, the Bostons and
Mutuals ; Wednesday, June 30, the Bostons and
Atlantics ; Friday, July 2, the Atlantics and Bostons ;
Saturday, July 3, the Yale and Princeton
Clubs. There will also be a professional game on
Monday, July 5, between the Atlantics and Mutuals.

A game of base-ball between the amateur
Reliance and Tuttle & Bailey Clubs was played on
the Union Grounds in Brooklyn, E.D., yesterday
afternoon, commencing at 4:05 P. M. About 100
persons were present on the grounds. Both are
Brooklyn clubs. The first four innings were closely
contested, and at the commencement of the fifth
inning the game stood a tie, the contesting clubs
having made but two runs each. At this point the
game turned in favor of the Reliance Club, and it
finally came off the winner in a score of 11 to 5, as
follows:

This afternoon the Olympic and Keystone Clubs
will play a game on the Union Grounds, and tomorrow
the professional game between the Athletics,
of Philadelphia, and the Atlantics, of Brooklyn,
will come off.
At Hoboken yesterday the champion nine of
the Flyaway Club, of this City, defeated the Hoboken
Club in a poorly played game by a score of
25 to 3. Gilligan and Shandley were best in the field
for the City club, with Fallon leading at the bat.
For the Hoboken nine, Donahue and Holstein carried
off the honors. Following is the score:

THE RELIANCE BEAT THE STARS CLUB 5 TO
2, AND THE HOBOKEN THE PAVONIA
NINA BY 12 to 4 -- OTHER GAMES.


A very fine amateur game of base-ball was
played yesterday afternoon on the Union Grounds,
in Brooklyn, E.D. between the Star Club of this

City, and the Reliance Club, of Brooklyn. Brennan,
of the Reliance Club, led at the bat, and Tilley on
the side of the Star Club. The fielding was very
sharp, and but few errors were committed by either
club. An unfortunate accident happened to Brennan,
the catcher of the Reliance Club. During the
eighth inning he was hit in the face by the ball,
hurting him severely, and causing the left side of
his face to become badly swollen. A delay of about
ten minutes ensued, when, despite the pain, Brennan
resumed his place in the game, amid great applause
from the spectators. The game was finally
won by the Reliance Club, by a score of 5 to 2 as follows:

Yesterday the Hoboken nine played the Pavonia
nine of Jersey City, their first State amateur championship
game of the season, on the Elysian Fields,
Hoboken, in the presence of about 1,500 spectators.
The game was very interesting, but was entirely
one-sided. The batting and fielding of the Hoboken
nine was very fine, they making but three errors in
the game, while that of the Pavonias was very poor.
The game was finally won by the Hoboken nine by
a score of 12 to 4. McCracken, Holstein, and McDermot
excelled at the bat and in the field for the
winning club: of the Pavonias, Braden and Carroll
played best in the field, and Bryce at the bat. The

NOTES.

A game between the Unions of Newark, and
the Olympics of Paterson, played on the grounds
of the latter on Thursday last, resulted in a victory
for the Olympics by a score of 5 to 3.
On the Union Grounds yesterday the Stars,
of this City, were beaten by the Reliance nine by a
score of 5 to 2.
The Reliance Club will play a game with the
Union Club of Elizabeth, N.J., on Monday, July
5, on the Waverley Fair Grounds, in Waverley, near
Elizabeth, N.J. The Reliance and Chelsea Clubs,
both of Brooklyn, expect to play a game on the
Capitoline Grounds in Brooklyn, on Thursday,
July 1.
The Washingtons defeated the Louisville Eagles
yesterday by a score of 18 to 4.
The Tecumseh Baseball Club, of London, Ontario,
beat the Ætnas, of Detroit, the champions of
Michigan, at London, Ontario, yesterday. Score, 15
to 6.
The Yale University Base-ball nine defeated the
Amherst nine at Amherst yesterday by a score of 5
to 3. In Springfield the Yale Freshmen defeated
the Harvard Freshmen -- 17 to 4.
A game of base-ball was to have been played yesterday
afternoon on the St. George Grounds, corner
of Willow and Eighth streets, in Hoboken, N.J.,
between the Knickerbocker Club, of this City, and
the Englewood Club, of Englewood, N.J. The
Knickerbocker Club was on hand with a full team
but the Englewood Club failing to appear, two nines
were formed from among the Knickerbockers, after
waiting some hours, and a short but very good game
was played with four innings, that being all that
time would allow. The fielding and batting were
considered much above the average usually witnessed
on those grounds. The first nine won the
game, the score standing 12 to 3 in their favor.
On the Capitoline Grounds the Chelseas beat the
Mystics by a score of 16 to 2.

GAMES PLAYED YESTERDAY AT THE UNION,
CAPITOLINE, AND OTHER GROUNDS -- ANNOUNCEMENTS
FOR THE FOURTH OF
JULY.

One of the most closely-contested games of
base-ball that have been played in this vicinity this
season was played on the Union Grounds, Brooklyn,
E.D., yesterday afternoon, between the Mutual
Club, of this City, and the Union Club, of Elizabeth,
N.J. About 300 persons were present. The game
was called at 4:10 P. M., and the Mutuals went first
to the bat. The Union Club contains
many veteran players of old and celebrated
clubs, and the playing yesterday,
on both sides, was superb. Only two runs were
made during the entire game, and they were made
by the Mutuals, by errors, in the second inning.
The Unions succeeded in making first base but
once, and the Mutuals, with all their skill, made
only four base hits during the game. The pitching
on both sides was very fine, and the batters found
it very difficult to make good hits. The game was
won by the Mutual Club, the score standing 2 to 0,
in their favor, as follows:

A game was played on the Capitoline grounds, in
Brooklyn, yesterday afternoon, between the Concord
Club, of Brooklyn, and the Winona Club, of
Flatbush, Long Island, in the presence of about 200
persons. The game was called at 4:35 P.M., and the
Concords went first to the bat. A serious accident
happened to Decker, of the Concord Club, in the
seventh inning. His right hand was split open by
the ball, between the thumb and fore finger, disabling
him so severely that he was obliged to abandon
the game. The game was won by the Concord
Club, by a score of 25 to 8. The following is the

The Nameless Club, of Brooklyn, and the Enterprise
Club of Hempstead, Long Island, played in
Hempstead yesterday, which was won by the Nameless
Club by a score of 13 to 8. Following is the

A game was also played on the Capitoline Grounds,
in Brooklyn, yesterday afternoon, between the
Bruce & Cook Club and the A. Werts Club, both of
Brooklyn. The Bruce & Cook Club won by a
score of 38 to 2.
To-morrow being observed as the Fourth of July,
which comes this year on Sunday, there will be
numerous games in this vicinity. There will be a
professional game on the Union Grounds, in Brooklyn,
E.D., between the Mutual Club, of New-York,
and the Atlantic Club, of Brooklyn. To-morrow,
there will also be a game on the Waverly Fair
Grounds, near Elizabeth, N.J., between the Reliance
Club, of Brooklyn, and the Union Club, of
Elizabeth, N.J.
The St. George's Cricket Club, of New York City,
will play with the Merrion Cricket Club, of Philadelphia,
to-morrow, on the latter's new grounds at
Ardmen, near Philadelphia. There will also be a
game of cricket at the Prospect Park Grounds, in
Brooklyn, to-morrow, between the Prospect Park
Cricket Club and the Manhattan Cricket Club.
The following additional games of base-ball in this
vicinity are to be played this week: Thursday,
July 8, the Reliance Club, of Brooklyn, and the
Union Club, of Newark, N.J., at Irvington, N.J.;
on Friday, July 9, the Chelsea and Frontier
Clubs, both of Brooklyn, on the Capitoline Grounds,
in Brooklyn; on Saturday, July 10, the Concord and
Nameless Clubs, both of Brooklyn, on the Capitoline
Grounds, in Brooklyn.
