We've seen men walk on the moon—can you see them walking on Mars? They
may. Can
you picture jumbo-jetting N.Y.-Paris in about the time it takes to run off Hello
Dolly!?
You will—and soon. . . . It took the sixties to knock old standards of beauty
into a
cocked hat and change the very meaning of fashion—it was just that mix of inventiveness
and recklessness we needed to escape the cookie-cutter mould and see that fashion
today is simply how attractively and comfortably we make ourselves heard in
what
Baudelaire called The Great Parade of modern life. . . .Today's triumph is the
vitality
and the imagination of those who live the life well; they—and never again the
fashion
dictators—will lead the whole roiling, moiling, magical Parade right up to the
seventies,
and pull everyone along with them to still greener fields of opportunity.

FORECAST—1970
Crocheted-looking crochet in thin, thin gossamer wool. For long topcoats. For
stringy little
dresses, to wear with bare legs and string-colour canvas boots. For just wrapping
yourself up in.
And new straight pants are mid-calf length. They can be tartan and you can
add an Argyle-knit weskit to
below the hip, an India-print silk scarf that falls still longer, and a Paisley
shirt underneath... Vary your
lengths, pile design on design—mix your patterns, textures, colours, levels—crack
the mould and make new
proportions for yourself.
Mid-calf skirts and dresses have a certain little something
for evening—a dash, a mood, a languor— and you must have
beautiful boots with them.

Dingly-dangly things....Wrapped and strapped waists and dangling ends - braided
belts with huge
tassels, leather belts and sashes with lots of fringe... Fringe, fringe, fringe.
Fringed suede gloves and
boots. Long fringe falling from tiny boleros, from sleeves, from little cuffs....
Knotted leather
thongs, slim as shoelaces, tied around the neck, waist, wrists, wrapped up the
leg like boots.... Tails
on fur—bouncing around, making things lively—mink with tails, cross fox with
tails, sable with tails
—any fur with tails.
Bandoleers of graduated large pearls—large over the shoulder, getting gradually
larger as they slide down across the midriff and fall on the opposite hip.
BODY SCULPTURE IN GLEAMING METALS. JEWELLED OR PLAIN-WORN AT THE THROAT
OR ANYWHERE
ON THE TORSO—OVER A DRESS. OVER BARE SKIN. THIS IS A WONDERFUL WAY FOR A
WOMAN TO ADORN HERSELF—AS IT HAS BEEN SINCE THE AGE OF PERICLES.
Rein in your shoulderbag—the strap should be short, no more than it takes to
go around
your armhole, and the bag sits tight to the body in back.... As for the one-strap
shoulderbag:
it's very smashdashio when a good hunk of strapping is held right up against
you in
front and the rest just falls over your back like a schoolgirl's bookbag.
Makeup is alive at last. Spectacular make-up. Makeup with a kick
to it. With a lot of yellow in it... pure yellow rubbed near the
hairline, towards the eyes... a blond-toned base with sheen and transparency...
eyebrows banished, bleached and curved in
a golden tone, just done away with... This is a made-up-looking makeup we're
talking about—totally artificial, total fantasy—
and it will slip over the best-scrubbed faces which, at other times, will go
back to being best-scrubbed faces... different ways
for different days. But remember: a woman painting her face like a heathen
idol is divine!
This is a year when everything is available and extremely good—not to a jaded
eye. But to the woman with active
tastes and her eye in on things, fashion for 1970 will look very very good,
indeed—always with a different little teeny-weeny,
gigantic slant to it. Skirt lengths will vary with your moods. And
forget all the rules about one right look—
indulge your imagination....We are going back to instinct. We have had
the gypsy look and we are sticking with it. We
have had the hippie look and we adore it. These are the rich looks now.
These are the looks that make you discipline
yourself: you have to weigh and play with colour, design, proportion, how much,
how little to put on when, and if, and
how—in fashion today, selectiveness is as valuable to you as a friend at Chase
Manhattan.
Wrap up in print, right? A this-year kind of coatdress in a delicious,
something-like-Paisley wool print of navy and white—very stylized
leaves and flowers that you walk right into and wrap around....
Then a white hat—and white, white boots so everybody gets to see lots of smooth,
pretty knee. Dress by Trigère, of Pomezia wool, Bergdorf Goodman;
